The universities and colleges in the coalition are playing a unique role in breaking down barriers to opportunity as anchor institutions in communities across the UK. The Purpose Coalition is setting new standards on driving social mobility.
Chair of the Purpose Coalition is Rt Hon Justine Greening, the former Secretary of State for Education. Between 2010 and 2018 Justine served as a UK Cabinet Minister, also holding the posts of Secretary of State for International Development and Transport. A long-term campaigner on social mobility and levelling up both inside and now outside of Parliament, in 2018 Justine co-founded the Social Mobility Pledge to bring organisations together to improve social mobility.

RAISING STANDARDS, CREATING OPPORTUNITIES
Raising Standards, Creating Opportunities is an advocacy and policy campaign by the Purpose Coalition highlighting that the UK’s universities are engines of social mobility and fundamental building blocks of opportunity for communities that need them most.
Our campaign is focussed on sharing best practice and practical steps that universities are taking to maximise both their social and economic impact.
The campaign’s first report was launched in the House of Commons in 2023 with a cross-party caucus of MPs, and is focussed on role Universities can play in raising standards in their local area and their work pre sixth-form alongside the vital role our Universities play in driving local economic growth as anchor institutions.
